COVID-19: state of alert and public services

In the current context of extraordinary measures in response to the epidemiological situation of the coronavirus / Covid-19, it is recommended that citizens use online and phone options to access public services.

Several measures have also been announced to ease the influx to on-site services.

Documents that expire after February 24th will remain valid until June 30th

The portuguese government has decreed that documents that expire after February 24th will remain valid until June 30th.

This applies to:

  • Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão)
  • Driver's license
  • Criminal record
  • Certificates
  • Documents and visas related to the stay in national territory.

These documents do not have to be renewed and must be accepted for all legal purposes.

Public services available online
There are already many Public Administration services available online.

The ePortugal portal gathers information on the vast majority of public services in the country, such as: Citizen Card, social security, certificates, registration, tax and finances, among many others.

Use the ePortugal search bar to find the services you want, and check if they are available online.

The portal's Companies and Businesses area offers a large number of services related to companies and economic activities.

Social Security

Scheduling public services
If a public service is not accessible online, it is recommended that you pre-schedule.

Scheduling for AT (Tax Authority) offices and IRN (Institute for Registry and Notary) (Citizen Card, Passport, others) offices can be done on the Online Service Scheduling platform.

Scheduling for Social Security, IEFP (Institute of Employment and Professional Training) and ACT (Authority for Working Conditions) offices can be done on the SIGA platform (also available in the app store).

To schedule an appointment, a password is required to access Segurança Social Direta (more information on the registration page).
