What is the Social Emergency Line?

Number 144 - National Social Emergency Line (LNES) - is a public telephone service, free of charge, operating 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Its objective is to guarantee an immediate response to situations that require urgent and emerging action in the field of social protection, as well as to ensure accessibility to subsequent social referral/follow-up, from a perspective of insertion and autonomy.

Who is it aimed at and in what situations can the Social Emergency Line be used?

This line is aimed at all citizens, who are on national territory, in a situation of unprotection and vulnerability, and who need social support. Among other situations, the following stand out:

  • People victims of domestic violence;
  • Children and young people in danger;
  • People in a situation of loss or lack of autonomy;
  • Homeless people.

Situations of vulnerability and social protection are considered, resulting from not being assured the minimum conditions of survival and constituting a real, current or imminent danger to physical and psychic integrity, requiring immediate intervention.

Situations of social vulnerability and lack of protection resulting from failure to ensure the minimum conditions of survival in the short term are also considered.
