Social daycare centers free of charge as of today

01.09.2022

As of today, September 1, daycare centers in the social and solidarity sector will be free of charge for all children born on or after September 1, 2021. The measure includes educational activities, food, registration and insurance costs, as well as costs for extended opening hours.

The goal of the measure is to cover 100,000 children by 2024, i.e. all children of daycare age, regardless of their family income.

5 thousand more vacancies for social daycare centers

It is also planned to create 5 thousand more vacancies this school year. The notice will be launched this month, under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), with a budget of 20 million euros.

The new vacancies may open throughout the country, but the areas with more demand and less response will have priority, of which the metropolitan area of Lisbon is an example.

Extension to the private sector in January 2023

As of January 2023, private sector daycare centers will also be included, guaranteeing vacancies in case there are none in the social sector network.
