Free day care for children born after September 2021

26.07.2022

All children born on or after 1 September 2021 will have the right to attend free nursery schools in the social and solidarity-based sector. The measure comes into force on 1 September 2022. The aim is to cover 100,000 children by 2024.

The agreement establishes priorities in the allocation of places to children

  • with disability and/or incapacity
  • from the most deprived families
  • whose parents are the main informal carers
  • from single-parent or large families whose parents live or work in the area
  • at risk, as signalled by the Commissions for the Protection of Children and Young People or by the Courts, with indication of attendance at a nursery schools.

Social Security will assume the values of the co-payments that were paid by families, at a cost of 460 euros per child. Currently, it was paying 293 euros, with the families giving an additional variable contribution.

This includes pedagogical activities, food, enrolment and insurance costs, as well as costs with extended opening hours.

Free day care will be applied in phases: every year there will be an increase of one more year of covered day care, until it reaches all the children of the social and solidarity network. The free day care will be maintained during the years in which the children are in the day care.
