FCT creates new Advanced Computing Center

11.11.2020

FCT - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology has signed a cooperation protocol with the University of Aveiro for the creation of an Advanced Computing Skills Centre, which will reinforce the National Advanced Computing Network.

This new structure - Advanced Computing Portugal 2030 - has three areas of intervention: the creation of supercomputing infrastructures in the country, the retention of talent with advanced digital skills (artificial intelligence and big data, among others) and the dynamisation of public policies to fill the gap between infrastructures and people.

It will also act "as a gateway to the four Supercomputing Centres (HPCs), with high storage capacity and the preparation and recovery of data from these centres", also ensuring an important role in the analysis of these data, explains the FCT.

The four supercomputing centres mentioned are MACC - Minho Advanced Computing Centre, LCA - Laboratory of Advanced Computing of the University of Coimbra, High Performance Computing of the University of Évora and the National Distributed Computing Infrastructure in Lisbon.

The institutions that host these Competence Centres receive funding from FCT to support the purchase of equipment and the hiring of human resources and will also soon receive a strong boost from the European "EuroCC" project, a funding programme for Horizonte 2020
