Digital Europe Program launched to accelerate digital transition in Europe

17.05.2021

The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union is organising, in partnership with the European Commission (EC), the conference Leading the Digital Decade, scheduled for 1 and 2 June. The agenda includes the official launch of the Digital Europe Programme.

Established through the publication of Regulation 2021/694, the Digital Europe Programme is a European financial instrument that aims to contribute around 7.6 billion euros to accelerate the digital transition in Europe. The official launch is scheduled for the second day of the conference, on 2 June.

The Communication "2030 Digital Compass: the European way for the Digital Decade" marks the beginning of the conference, which will be in virtual format.

The initiative will include the presentation of the Lisbon Declaration, which is a contribution to the preparation of an EC proposal for a Joint Interinstitutional Statement of Digital Principles.  The inauguration of the EllaLink submarine cable - retransmitted from Cabo de Sines - which will provide high capacity connectivity, linking Europe and Latin America, is also on the agenda.
