United Kingdom has left the European Union

The United Kingdom has formalized its withdrawal from the European Union on January 31st, 2020. The Portuguese Government provides the Contingency Plan for the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union to inform the rights of Portuguese citizens residing in the country, as well as British citizens in Portugal. The transition period started on February 1st, 2020 and will continue until December 31st, 2020.

Portuguese residents in the United Kingdom
All Portuguese citizens who have moved to the United Kingdom until December 31st, 2020, have until June 30th, 2021 to apply for resident status through the EU Settlement Scheme, which can be consulted on the United Kingdom public sector information website. In the case of citizens arriving in the UK before December 31st 2020, and who hold resident status through the EU Settlement Scheme, they can continue to enter the country with a valid Citizen Card until December 31st, 2025.

European Union residents visiting or traveling to the United Kingdom
In situations of visits or trips lasting up to 3 months, it will be possible to enter the United Kingdom by December 31st, 2020 with a Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen Card), or Passport without a visa.
