Renewal of Citizen Card by SMS keeps increasing

Between June 8th and August 16th, 148,118 Portuguese citizens accepted the renewal by SMS of the Citizen Card (CC). This represents 46.97% of the more than 315 thousand SMS sent requesting authorisation for the simplified renewal by SMS.

The almost 150 thousand Portuguese citizens who accepted the renewal by SMS represent 25.86% of the total number of requests for renewal of the Citizen Card that the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado (Institute for Registries and Notary) received in the period indicated.

Like the renewal online, the renewal by SMS has a cost of 16.20 euros and does not require travel to a desk. This is the simplest way to renew the Citizen Card for those who are 25 years old or more, reside in national territory and do not need to change data on the card.

To benefit from the service it is necessary to have the mobile phone or email contacts associated with the CC, among other requirements.

The adhesion to the service is simple, after receiving an email from helpdesk-cartaodecidadao@irn.mj.pt or a mobile message from the number (+351) 915 692 970, send an SMS to that number with the renewal code (token) you received, in the format "CCRN token YES". You have up to 7 days to reply. The sending of the SMS is free.
