Who can activate the authentication and digital signature of the Citizen Card?
What are the documents and requirements to activate the authentication and digital signature of the Citizen Card?
To activate the authentication and the digital signature of the Citizen Card, you must have the PIN codes letter of the Citizen Card with you.
How activate the authentication and digital signature of the Citizen Card?
If you pick up your Citizen Card at the desk, you can ask to activate the authentication and digital signature at that moment.
If you receive your Citizen Card by post, you will have to go to a Citizen Card’s pick-up desk to ask for activation of the authentication and digital signature at this moment.
If you have had the Citizen Card for some time and the card does not have the functions of authentication and digital signature activated, you will have to go to a Citizen Card’s pick-up desk.
If you do not know whether the Citizen Card has the authentication and digital signature functions active, you can check by following the steps below (you need a smartcard reader and a computer):
- You can check if the authentication function of your Citizen Card is active, in the Autenticação.gov computer application at the “Segurança - Certificados” tab.
- You may check if the digital signature feature of your Citizen Card is enabled in the Autenticação.gov computer application, at the “Segurança - Certificados” tab.
If authentication or digital signature are not active, you can go to a Citizen Card’s pick-up desk to activate them.
You must bring the PIN codes letter of the Citizen Card with you.

When can you activate the authentication and digital signature of the Citizen Card?
The digital certificates of authentication and digital signature associated with the Citizen Card will be available 48 hours after you activate them at a Citizen Card’s pick-up desk.
