Activate the Digital Mobile Key

The Digital Mobile Key is a means of signing in and digital signature certified by the Portuguese State. It allows the user to access several public or private portals, and sign digital documents, always with the same access credentials.

  • Through the "Activate online" button for citizens holding a Citizen Card, card reader and authentication PIN code
  • Free of charge
  • With the access data to the Portal das Finanças (Finances Portal), and only for those who hold a Citizen Card. You must wait for the letter with the temporary password (approximately five business days)

Who can Activate the Digital Mobile Key?

  • Any national or foreign citizen can activate the Digital Mobile Key, by associating it to their correspondent identification document:

    • (Portuguese) Citizen Card
    • (Portuguese) Identity Document
    • Passport
    • Residence Permit
    • Residence Card.

How can you Activate the Digital Mobile Key?

You can activate the CMD online or at a service desk. See the steps below to learn how.

If you need to renew or request the Citizen Card, you may also activate the Digital Mobile Key when you withdraw it.

Activate the Digital Mobile Key at the Autenticação.gov portal with the Citizen Card

You need:

  • to have a valid Citizen Card
  • a Smart Card reader
  • the authentication PIN Code of the Citizen Card
  • a mobile phone number and correspondent mobile phone at the moment of activation.

In this Autenticação.gov portal page, follow the following instructions:

  1. Click on “Activate with Citizen Card”.
  2. Sign in with the Citizen Card.
  3. Fill in the new registry form with the requested data.
  4. To conclude the activation, insert the validation code you have received on the chosen mobile phone number.

Activate the Digital Mobile Key with the access data to the Portal das Finanças (Finances Portal)

You need:

  • to have a valid Citizen Card (warning: if you have an Identity Document instead of a Citizen Card, you must activate the Digital Mobile Key at a face-to-face service desk).
  • the access data to the Portal das Finanças (Finances Portal)
  • a mobile phone number that you want to associate to the Digital Mobile Key.

In this Autenticação.gov portal page, follow the following instructions:

  1. Click on “activate via Portal das Finanças”
  2. Sign in with your access data to the Portal das Finanças (Finances Portal).
  3. Fill in the new registry form with the requested data.
  4. A letter will be sent to the address on your Citizen Card.
  5. Wait for the arrival of the letter with your Digital Mobile Key’s temporary PIN code.
  6. To conclude the activation, use the temporary code indicated on the letter in the first sign in online with the Digital Mobile Key.

For safety reasons, when you do the first signing in you will be asked to change the temporary PIN code sent in the letter to a code of your choice, which must be between 4 and 8 numbers.

This first signing in can be done in any portal of your choice, where it is possible to access with Digital Mobile Key. 
You may, for example, sign in at Autenticação.gov and access your reserved area, where you can manage your Digital Mobile Key’s features.

Warning: If you activate the Digital Mobile Key with the access data to the Portal das Finanças (Finances Portal), you may only enable the Digital Mobile Key’s digital signature feature at a face-to-face service desk. Learn more at Activate the digital signature of the Digital Mobile Key.

Activate the Digital Mobile Key in person

You need:

  • An identification document
    • if you are a national citizen, you can activate with the Citizen Card, Identity Document or passport
    • if you are a foreign citizen, you can enable with the passport, residence permit or card
  • a mobile phone number and correspondent mobile phone at the moment of activation

You can activate the Digital Mobile Key in person:

Warning: If you are a foreign citizen, you must have a tax payer number to activate the Digital Mobile Key with the Residence Permit or Card. If you want to activate the Digital Mobile Key with a passport, you recommend you to also associate the tax payer number.
