Take the mopeds driving test

The mopeds - with cylinder power up to 49 cubic centimetres - test may be carried out from 14 years old, at entities accredited by IMT, such as driving schools.

The test comprises a theory test and a driving test. From 16 years old, it is possible to take the tests directly at IMT, without the need to attend classes.

Who can take the mopeds driving test?

  • Any individual who is, at least, 14 years old.

    From 16 years old, you may take the test under different conditions.

    If you already hold a car driving license (category B), you do not need to take the test to drive mopeds.

Where take the mopeds driving test?

You may apply for the test through an entity accredited by IMT, such as a driving school or at the Portuguese Road Prevention.

The entities authorized to carry out mopeds tests are identified in this list with the name “Moped 14/16 years old” in the “Courses” column.

What are the documents and requirements to take the mopeds driving test?

    • Medical certificate (do you not need to submit the certificate: you only need to go to an appointment and request the certificate, which will be directly sent, through an electronic platform, by the doctor).
    • Portuguese Citizen Card or identity card. If you have foreign nationality, submit one of the following documents:
      • Temporary or permanent residence permit issued by the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF).
      • Temporary or permanent residence card issued by the SEF.
      • Passport + a study, work, temporary stay or residence visa, issued by a Portuguese Consular Office, by the SEF or by other service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
      • Portuguese citizen card or identity document for Brazilian citizens under the general status of equal rights and duties, provided by the Friendship, Cooperation and Consultation Treaty between the Portuguese Republic and the Federal Republic of Brazil.
    • Form of request of a driving test’s scheduling - model 2 - IMT.
    • If you are under 18, you also need:
      • a complete birth certificate
      • a written authorization by the individual who holds the paternal responsibility. This individual must sign the authorization at the place where the application for the test is carried out and submit their identification document.

What is the Price to take the mopeds driving test?

To take the test through IMT

  • To request the mopeds learning permit: €10
  • For each theoretical test: €15
  • For each practical test: €15
  • For the driving license’s issue: €30

To take the test through another entity

The price of a test taken through a driving school or other accredited entity is established by the entity where you are enrolled.

How take the mopeds driving test?

The test comprises a theory test (road code) and a practical test (driving). It may be carried out in different ways, according to the applicant’s age.

From 14 years old

You may take the test through an entity accredited by IMT, such as a driving school or at the Portuguese Road Prevention.

The entities authorized to carry out mopeds tests are identified in this list with the name “Moped 14/16 years old” in the “Courses” column.

In this case, you pay the test to the entity in which you are enrolled to take the test.

From 16 years old

You may opt to:

  • take the test at IMT - through the self-proposition scheme:
  1. apply for the test at a IMT’s service desk
  2. study the road code and the driving by yourself
  3. schedule a day for the theory test and another for the driving test
  • take the test at a driving school:
  1. enrol in the driving school
  2. attend the mopeds theory and driving classes
  3. apply for the test through the school.

If you already hold a car driving license, you do not need to take the test

If you already hold a driving license for category B vehicles and you are over 25 years old, you may drive motorcycles up to 125 cubic centimetres without taking any exam.
