It is an instalment in cash, paid monthly to the orphans of individuals not covered by any social protection scheme.
The pension’s amount varies accordingly to the number of orphans and the existence, or non-existence, of a spouse or ex-spouse entitled to the pension and is calculated based on a percentage of the social pension’s amount.

Who can request the orphan’s pension?
To the orphan’s pension are entitled the orphans who meet the following conditions:
are under 18 years old and not emancipated
are Portuguese citizens and reside in Portugal
do not exercise a professional activity covered by a mandatory social protection scheme
are orphans of an individual who did not contribute to the Social Security or to any other social protection scheme
do not receive, from another social protection scheme, a pension of the same nature. But they may receive an orphan’s pension for the death of the father and another for the death of the mother
meet one of the following conditions (means test):
have a monthly gross income up to 197.17€ (corresponds to 40% of the Social Support Indexation’s amount), provided that the household income is not higher than 720.65€ (corresponds to 1.5 times the Social Support Indexation’s amount), or
are part of a household in which the income, per individual, is not higher than 144.13€ (corresponds to 30% of the Social Support Indexation’s amount) and are in a situation of risk or social dysfunction.

When can you request the orphan’s pension?
You can apply for a pension at any time from the date of death. However:
if you apply within six months from the month following the death, you are entitled to benefit from that month.
if you apply after that period, you are only entitled from the month following the delivery date.
In cases where the orphan has no legal representative, the counting of these periods begins from the date on which a representative is appointed by the Court.
