Request a vehicle’s seizure
When the property registry of a vehicle is not updated, the person on behalf of whom the vehicle is registered may request a seizure to withdraw it from circulation.
The request is submitted to the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) (Mobility and Transports Institute), which sends the seizure order to the police. The objective is to withdraw from circulation all the vehicles with no updated property registry.

When the vehicle remains in your name and is on the road with outdated ownership registration, 60 days after the sale.
Where request a vehicle’s seizure?
This service may only be requested in person:
- at the IMT’s service desk of your area of residence
- at one of the Citizen Shops which provide IMT services
- at a Vehicle Registry Office.
NB: In case you have bought a vehicle with a seizure order, go to one of these desks to regularize the situation.
What are the documents and requirements to request a vehicle’s seizure?
When you request the seizure, you will need to submit:
- a document called “Owner’s simple information”; issued by the Vehicle Registry Office, which proves that the vehicle is still registered under the applicant’s name
- your Citizen Card or identity document
- the form Model 9 of IMT.
What is the Price to request a vehicle’s seizure?
The seizure price is 10€.
