Revalidate the driving license

Driving licenses must be renewed before they expire. The expiry date depends on your age or the category of vehicle for which you are licensed.

You can renew your license on the IMT Online portal or at the Espaço Cidadão and IMT counters. If you meet certain requirements, you can already renew your license using the id.gov.pt mobile app.

If you live in a country outside the European Union (EU), you can only renew your driving license at an IMT office.

Driving license renewal only applies to Portuguese licenses. If you have a foreign license, find out if you can use it or if you should exchange your foreign license for a Portuguese one.

When can you revalidate the driving license?

When you will need to renew your licence depends on the vehicle category and the age of the driver.

You must revalidate the license until your birthday

For example, if you must revalidate your license until you turn 50, you must do it until the last day you are 49 years old. The license expires on the day you turn 50. The deadline to process the revalidation starts 6 months before.

Avoiding fines and sitting new tests

It is important to renew your licence before it expires. Driving without a valid licence is punishable with a fine. If you wait more than 2 years after the expiry date to renew your licence, you will have to take a driving test (practical part) in order to renew it.

If you wait more than 5 years and less than 10 years after the expiry date to renew your licence, you will have to take some lessons and take a driving test (practical part) in order to renew it. If you wait more than 10 years, you will have to get a new driving licence. You will need to take classes on the highway code and driving lessons and then take the tests to get a licence.

How can you Revalidate the driving license?

On the id.gov.pt mobile application:

you need to have a Citizen Card, a Digital Mobile Key (CMD) and the id.gov.pt app installed.  The app is available in the App Store (iOS), Google Play Store (Android) or AppGallery (Huawei).

  1. Once the app is installed, and if you meet the necessary requirements, you will receive a push notification to renew your driving licence when you enter into the last 5 months before the licence expires.

  3. Follow the steps and make the payment. You will receive a confirmation notification.

The licence is sent automatically to the address at which your Citizen Card is registered.

Please pay attention to the following:

Expiry date of driving licences issued before 2008

If your driving licence was issued before 2008, you may have the wrong expiry date on the back of your licence.

The law has changed the expiry dates for the different categories of licences, and some older licences, which state that they should be renewed at the age of 65, may actually have expired. According to current law, they should be renewed at the age of 50 or 60.

You can confirm if this is the case for your licence on the My IMT driving licence platform.

What you need to do to renew your licence if it has expired

The licence must meet all of the following conditions:

  • have been issued before 2008;
  • have the mopeds (A1), motorcycles (A), light vehicles (B) and/or agricultural vehicles categories;
  • be valid until 65 years of age;
  • have expired more than 2 years ago.

You can submit this driving licence renewal application form under the Extraordinary Scheme for Renewing Driving Licences (RERTC).

The cost to renew a licence is EUR 30.

You will not need to take a special driving test because the driving licence expired more than 2 years ago.

Applications to renew extraordinary licences will be available until 1 August 2024.
