Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) starts work

31.10.2023

The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) is the new agency responsible for the reception, integration and asylum of migrants since 29 October.

AIMA was created with the abolition of the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) and the restructuring of the border control system. The administrative functions related to migrants and asylum will now be handled by AIMA.

AIMA is counting on the support of local authorities and the network of Local Support Centres for the Integration of Migrants to continue the mission previously carried out by SEF.

Later this year, an online portal will be launched to help process applications for family reunification from residents who have been in Portugal for some time.

The information on ePortugal that still refers to SEF and its services will be updated as soon as possible, so that it can be transferred to AIMA's competence, where applicable.

AIMA has 34 service counters and 10 more are expected to open by the end of 2024.

To find out more about AIMA's functions, see the Migration and Asylum: questions and answers page on the Government Portal.
