Covid-19: portuguese airports with new rules

31.07.2020

Following European Union’s recommendations on the operation of flights to and from Portugal, Portuguese airports will have new rules from August 1st. This adjustment in the context of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) is valid until 11:59 p.m. on August 15th.

Passengers on flights from countries considered to be at epidemiological risk who do not present proof of a negative test for the new coronavirus within 72 hours prior to travel may be denied boarding.

The rules are divided into three groups:

  • all countries in the European Union and the Schengen area, and countries considered to be at no epidemiological risk: access to airports is subject to general temperature control measures
  • all other countries, although authorisation is limited to EU citizens or residents of Portugal and their families coming to Portugal, and to journeys considered essential (for work, study, family reunion, health or humanitarian reasons): all passengers must have the new coronavirus test carried out at origin, guaranteed by airline companies 72 hours before the flight
  • flights to support the return of national citizens, with humanitarian characteristics, or from African Portuguese-speaking countries where it is difficult to guarantee tests at origin: the test on arrival at the national territory is compulsory. If nationals or residents of Portugal refuse to take the test at the airport, it must be carried out in a laboratory within 48 hours.

These rules are part of a strategy to ensure health and safety in August, ensuring a return to normality from September onwards.
