End of user fees in almost all NHS services

01.06.2022

As of today, 1 June, the collection of user fees ends in almost all services of the National Health Service (SNS). Payment will only be maintained in emergency services, when users have no prior reference from the SNS (through health centres or the SNS 24 line) or are not hospitalised after the emergency service.

Under the new rules, the exemption from user fees will be maintained for:

  • pregnant and parturient women
  • children up to 12 years old, inclusive
  • users with a degree of incapacity of 60% or more
  • blood donors
  • living donors of cells, tissues and organs
  • transplant patients
  • firefighters
  • military personnel
  • ex-military personnel of the Armed Forces, with permanent disability due to military service
  • people with proven economic insufficiency.

Since 2020, the fees for consultations in health centres, exams and analyses prescribed in the SNS, as well as in the first hospital consultations, have been progressively eliminated. With the new rules also ends the payment of the follow-up hospital consultations.
