Portugal bets on the first European law for artificial intelligence

29.01.2021

Portugal, under the Portuguese presidency of the European Union (EU), will focus on the adoption of the first EU law on artificial intelligence (AI), based on transparency and respect for users' rights.

The first European legal framework will take into account the risks involved in the use of AI and EU values of human rights and privacy, such as facial recognition, in a transparent framework that will strengthen citizens' trust in the digital economy.

Artificial intelligence is already used in several public service portals, as is the case of ePortugal, with the example of the chatbot Sigma, which helps citizens find the information they need on the portal.

The next step in European law will be to apply artificial intelligence to the processing of a large volume of data in industry and cities.

This AI issue will be mentioned in the Lisbon declaration on digital democracy, which is expected to be signed at the Digital Assembly, scheduled for June 1 and 2 in the Portuguese capital.
