Applying for an international driving permit

An international driving permit (IDP) allows you to legally drive vehicles of the category for which your driving licence entitles you to drive, in countries that:

  • are not in the European Union (EU);
  • are not in the European Economic Area (EEA); and
  • are signatories to the International Conventions on Road Traffic (Geneva Convention of 1949 and Vienna Convention of 1968).

An IDP is mandatory in some foreign countries, especially outside Europe and when you want to drive a hire car.

The IDP must always be accompanied by your driving licence.
