Applying for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence

Nursery school, primary school and secondary school teachers can receive support of up to EUR 200 to rent a secondary residence. This support is given to teachers placed in an educational establishment in the regions of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley or the Algarve, more than 70 km from their usual residence.

You can apply for the support at any time of year.

The support applies to rent paid from 1 September 2023, and will be in place until the end of 2025.

What are the documents and requirements to applying for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence?

  • In order to be eligible for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence, you must meet the following requirements:

    • you have been placed in an educational establishment in the regions of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (Lisboa e Vale do Tejo) or the Algarve that is more than 70 km (in a general straight line) from your usual place of residence;
    • you need to rent or sub-rent a residence or part of a secondary residence in the area where you will be working;
    • your salary is no higher than index 272 (the 7th bracket) of the career scale for primary and secondary education teachers;
    •  you have an effort rate of at least 35% of your average monthly income in relation to both permanent and temporary housing.

How applying for rent support for teachers placed far from their usual residence?

You must apply for this rent support through the SIGRHE application.

You will need to log in with the account you use to access Directorate-General for School Administration (DGAE) applications.

To calculate how much each person can receive, the following parameters are taken into account:

  • average monthly income;
  • charges for the primary residence (i.e. rent or mortgage payments);
  • charges for the secondary residence.

If you receive other rent support – from the Institute for Housing and Urban Regeneration (IHRU) – this amount will be deducted from the amount calculated here.
