Request a NARIC Declaration

The NARIC Declaration attests to the level of higher education courses taken abroad, as well as to the foreign higher education institutions awarding these courses.
You can also ask for a NARIC declaration to certify the grading scale in force in higher education in Portugal.

  • Any person who has attended or completed a higher education course abroad.

What are the documents and requirements to Request a NARIC Declaration ?

To request the NARIC declaration you need to attach one of the following documents:

  • copy of the diploma

or

  • document proving the attendance of a higher education course.

If the document is not in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French, you must also attach an official translation into Portuguese.

According to the Portuguese law in force, the following entities may perform and certify translations:

  • notaries 
  • Portuguese consulate in the country where the document was issued
  • consulate in Portugal of the country where the document was issued and a qualified translator 
  • registrars of any registry office
  • registration officers; lawyers and solicitors
  • Chambers of Commerce and Industry recognised under Decree-Law No. 244/92, of 29 October.

Note: What must be certified is the content of the translation and not the signatures of those involved.

What is the Price to Request a NARIC Declaration ?

The price of the declaration is set annually and can be consulted on the website of the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES).

You can pay by:

  • multibanco, using the data provided on the page or by email, when submitting the form
  • bank transfer, being necessary to attach the respective proof when submitting the online form.

How can you Request a NARIC Declaration ?

To request the NARIC declaration you must fill in the online form, available at the DGES website.

In the first step of the form you will have to choose what type of NARIC declaration you want. 

There are three types of declaration:

  • Declaration of course level and/or foreign higher education institution - certifying the level of foreign higher education qualifications or diplomas in the country of origin and, when applicable, the foreign higher education institutions that grant them as recognised institutions
  • Declaration of the level of the foreign higher education course and/or institution for Personal Income Tax purposes - certifying the level of foreign higher education qualifications for Personal Income Tax purposes, in accordance with article 78 -D, no. 3 of the Personal Income Tax Code
  • Declaration regarding the grading scale in the Portuguese higher education system - proves the grading scale in force in the higher education system in Portugal.

After the payment is validated, the declaration is sent to the email you indicated on the form.

Note: The declarations of level of foreign higher education qualifications only attest to the level of the course in the country of origin. These declarations do not replace the recognition of your foreign higher education degree or diploma in  Portugal.

The National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) is the national centre designed to answer questions on academic recognition of foreign degrees and diplomas of higher education.

It is part of the ENIC-NARIC network, which comprises the information centres of the Member States of the European Union and the centres of other member countries of the Council of Europe and of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Portuguese ENIC/NARIC Centre was created in 1986 and is part of the Directorate-General for Higher Education.
