Placing new tobacco products on the market

Manufacturers or importers wishing to place a new tobacco product on the market must apply to the Directorate-General for Economic Activities (DGAE) for the respective marketing authorisation.

New tobacco products cannot be placed on the market without the DGAE’s authorisation. A previously issued authorisation will expire if there are changes to the product which require a new notification.

Economic operators must also notify the DGAE of any changes in the identifying information of the manufacturer or importer and of the person responsible for the application.

Application for marketing authorisation

Marketing authorisation for a new tobacco product must be applied for prior to the commercialisation of the product, which cannot occur without the DGAE having issued the respective authorisation.

Communication of changes to the information

Any change in information regarding the manufacturer or importer, and the person responsible for the application for the marketing authorisation, must be updated no later than 10 days after such a change has been confirmed.
