Requesting a temporary passport

A temporary passport can be requested by people with Portuguese citizenship who need to travel outside the European Union and the Schengen Area as a matter of urgency.

To request a temporary passport, you need to justify your request and the justification must be accepted by the Institute of Registries and Notaries.

The temporary passport can be issued on the day of travel, is not electronic and has a maximum validity of one year.

Some countries do not accept temporary passports for entry into their territory. Check with the responsible authorities in the country you are travelling to see if the temporary passport is accepted.
